ABOUT THE PROJECT
A quiet country home was recently purchased by a young energetic family. With previous renovations to the main living spaces and kitchen, it was finally time to tackle the Master’s Quarters. The existing master bedroom, closet and home office were outdated and provided a poor flow. The owners wanted to bring this space up to speed and add a couple bells and whistles while they were at it.
OUR SOLUTION
What started as a simple “remove and replace”, quickly became a full gut renovation. The owner’s were very clear that they wanted a space they could connect with and customize completely. Every aspect of the space was utilized and made to work with both their lifestyle both now and in the future.
Vanity and Tub Space
A vintage dresser was the inspiration for the space and was customized to become the focal point of the bathroom as the double vanity. Matching mirrors and wall mounted faucets bring the old and the new together. The existing jacuzzi tub is about the only item that remained from the existing bathroom. The fixtures were swapped out, deck mounted controls were added and with a bit of elbow grease, the tub was ready for its second life.
Shower and Lavatory
The toilet was enclosed for privacy and outfitted with a state of the art electronic bidet toilet seat providing warming and washing functions. The walk in shower was enlarged, outfitted with dual heads and controls as well as a hand held sprayer. A large niche was added for plenty of product storage and a spacious bench was installed which will come in handy when using the shower steam system. A frameless glass enclosure separates the shower from the space and the entry area is outfitted with robe hooks and a generous towel warmer.
Lighting and Sound
Using the latest in lighting technology, the space has zoned recessed LED lighting which is all WiFi compatible, both the color and intensity can be manipulated from the owners phone or laptop. Additionally, vintage pendants, sconces and a chandelier were added, carrying the theme from one space to the next. A series of recessed speakers were installed in both the shower as well as the main bathroom and dressing areas. These units can all be zoned and controlled wirelessly as well.
Heating
Like so many of the houses built in the 1970’s, the space was designed entirely with hydronic baseboard heaters . Known for their inefficiency, these units were scraped for a more comfortable and efficient, radiant system. With full floor coverage and the ability to control the system wirelessly, there will be no reason to feel the chill of winter again.
Wet Bar and Office
Although the original space used an open floor plan, aside from a his and her closet, it felt dark and cramped. Opening up the area around the existing windows, implementing a new lighting design and using frosted glass double doors, the room was divided into a home office, sleeping area, dressing area and bathing area all while making the overall space feel more open and comfortable. A small nook created by the dressing room entrance was outfitted with a wet bar and mini fridge. As well as a perfect spot for the morning coffee or evening night cap, it acts as a utility cabinet housing the steam and sound equipment.
Tile and Stone
The owners kept the tile and stone simple but elegant. Carrara subway tile on all walls and a 1″ Carrara mosaic hexagon on the floor. The natural beauty of the marble is allowed to shine while simultaneously providing a clean canvas for the vintage decor.
